St. George Forane Church at Edappally

The style of the building is essentially Gothic with arched windows and buttresses intricate Corinthean columns and mondalams fused with traditional Kerala Architecture.  The interior is richly ornate with wooden carvings and embellishments and intricate golden leaf works, monochromatic murals and so forth.  The exterior walls are cladded with dressed stone and the octagonal roof is made of copper which is highly suitable to the monsoon conditions of Kerala. The entire exterior is paved with solid granite stones typical of traditional Kerala buildings as well as European Churches, lending spice to the fusion touch.The Church Complex is in three levels – the first floor housing the Assembly area which is approached by a vernacular ramp, having an area of 21000 Sq. ft. and the raked mezzanine with an area of 6350 Sq. ft., which can accommodate more than 2500 people.  The Ground floor has an area of 19500 Sq. ft., where offices, conference facilities, multi-purpose halls etc. are located. The Church has a column free span of 130 Ft. with eight portal frames with curvilinear top portion forming the twin umbrella structure with a clerestory in between creating a domical inner volume.  The building has a height of around 110 Ft. from the ground level.
